LIMA
Founded on January 18, 1535 under the name of City of Kings, it was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and the largest and most important city in South America during the Spanish colonial period. After independence it became the capital of the Republic of Peru. It is now the commercial, financial, cultural and political center of the country.
CUSCO
Home of the Inca Empire, the city is the oldest living city in the Americas, about 3.000 years old. In 1933, the city of Cusco was declared “Archaeological Capital of South America”, and in 1983, the UNESCO declared Cusco “Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. The 100 anniversary of the discovery of the world-renowned ruins of Machu Picchu was celebrated in 2011.
AREQUIPA
The city of Arequipa is also known as the “White City” for the color of its buildings made up of ashlar (white stone of volcanic origin). It is a very picturesque city that combines the beauty of its countryside with the breathtaking presence of volcanoes and snow-capped mountains. The city is surrounded by three volcanoes: The Misti (5.822 masl), the Chachani (6.075 masl) and the Picchu Picchu (5.664 masl). It is considered the second most important city of Peru after Lima.
PUNO
The department of Puno is located on the Titicaca Lake shore, the highest navigable lake in the world. From there, you can see the natural beauty surrounding the city and the Titicaca Lake with its floating islands and old Pre-Inca monuments known as “Chullpas de Sillustani”. Puno is also the folk capital of Peru for the variety and beauty of its music and dances.
ICA
Department of Peru considered the center of the most important Pre-Inca civilizations: Nasca (300 years BC) and Paracas (700 years BC). Ica is also known as the region of sand and sea, oasis and valleys. The Ballestas Islands, also known as the “Small Galapagos Islands” for the variety of birds and sea wolves, are located in the peninsula of Paracas in Ica. The world-renowned “Nazca Lines”, still a mystery for mankind, are also located in this department, in the area of Nazca.
